Opening throw

It is important to know the opening throws so you get a good start each time. Furthermore, you are getting a better understanding of the play, if you learn why the opening throws should be played as described below.
In the following pattern you see how the opening throws should be played in our opinion. In our description we have included both the 6 doublets (both cubes show the same eye number) and the 15 general combinations. It has to be mentioned, however, that with online Backgammon the 6 doublets do not apply. When clicking on the pictures with the individual opening throws you can see the described course graphically.

Throw Optimal course Description Picture
1,1 8/7 6/5 You can occupy the two most important positions 7 and 5. -
2,2 13/11 6/4 Results in good occupations and makes it possible for you to occupy the positions 7 or 5 with the next throw. -
3,3 13/7 Important occupation. -
4,4 24/20 13/9 Results in an advanced anchor (an occupation further in front in the opponent’s home field than the two first positions) and an occupation on position 9, which is a good starting point for a blockade play. -
5,5 13/3 Not the best throw concerning the positioning, but well for the pips counter. -
6,6 24/18 13/7 The best opening throw. Well for the pips counter and important occupations. If your opponent has a bad throw consecutively, a doubling can be considered. -
5,6 24/13 Removes a checker from the adversarial home field. Often leads to a run play.
4,6 8/2 6/2 Gives you two occupations in your home field.
4,5 24/20 13/8 Makes an advanced anchor in the adversarial home field possible.
3,6 24/18 13/10 Makes good positionings possible with the next throw. If run play is preferred, 24/15 can be used.
3,5 8/3 6/3 Results in a nice positioning in your home field.
3,4 13/10 13/9 Makes blockade play possible.
2,6 24/18 13/11 Makes good positionings with the next throw possible. On position 7 as well as on 5, and in addition on 18, which destroys the play of your opponent.
2,5 24/22 13/8 Makes an anchor in the opposing home field possible.
2,4 8/4 6/4 Gives to you an important occupation. A good opening throw.
2,3 13/10 13/11 Makes good occupations with the next throw possible.
1,6 13/7 8/7 Important occupation on position 7. The 5 and 7 are the most important positions to be occupied.
1,5 24/23 13/8 Makes an anchor in the opposing home field possible.
1,4 13/9 24/23 Makes occupations shortly before and in your home field possible, including an anchor in the opposing home field.
1,3 8/5 6/5 Except doublets, this is the best opening throw. Gives you the important occupation on position 5.
1,2 13/11 6/5 If your Blots (single stone) are not struck on the bar, you have good possibilities for occupations with the next throw. If you are beaten on position 5, you will still be able to use a 6er with the next throw. Instead of 6/5 you can play 24/23, which makes an advanced anchor possible in the opposing home field.
